The Startup Weekend concept has gotten great buzz, and has spread all over the world - from San Fran to Seattle to Phoenix to Hamburg, Germany. But, as many may have assumed, very few of the "startups" that have come out of these weekends that are actually live sites, much less businesses. Tech Crunch analyzes this very topic today - Analysis: How Far Do Projects Launched At Startup Weekends Travel? (Not Very Far) - and the results are not surprising. Of the "startups" launched after a Startup... Continue reading ...

Great advice from MG Siegler on TechCrunch today. Siegler reminds us of the common entrepreneurial temptation -- more features, more options, more changes...more, more, more. More complexity. This applies to both product and services companies.
Complexity compromises the customer (user) experience, detracts from a company's ability to communicate a focused message, and confounds our ability to sell. Simplicity in and of itself is not a solution... The emphasis on simplicity should be driven b... Continue reading ...

Alan Farber, Founder and CEO of Buildproof, sent this video clip to us the other day, mentioning quite astutely that "if there has ever been a movie scene that better embodies the true entrepreneurial experience, I've never seen it." Can't say we disagree.
If anyone's ever seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you'll surely remember this scene. Indy, to save his father, must take a step into what appears to be a bottomless chasm. No need to spoil the rest of the scene, but suffice is to s... Continue reading ...

I was very pleased and very proud to read this random blog posting wherein the blogger lauds Leaf Networks' network sharing software and articulates its value proposition in clear layman's terms. The company has garnered a great deal of traction with tens of thousands of end-users, and has engaged a few hardware and software firms in OEM licenses to its patent-pending technology. Take a moment and read the blog. The company has never been in touch with the author before. Let the word spread. ... Continue reading ...

It seems there are number of noteworthy entrepreneurs and venture capitalists that share our belief in how entrepreneurship will thrive in these economic times. Technology Review's Jason Pontin moderated a round table discussion at a Churchill Club event earlier this year in Mountain View, CA. The following article is an excerpt of that discussion that is worth reading. My personal favorite quote is from Steve Jurvetson, a Managing Partner of famed venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson... Continue reading ...

We
hear a lot of talk about "free" and "freemium" models, the idea that
you should give your products away at first and then monetize them in
other ways. There is even a book about it from Long Tail author Chris Anderson, aptly called "Free."
Michael Galpert at Center Networks
writes a good article on where people are still willing to pay. No
surprise that they are the basics of good business. And by the way,
they are willing to pay even in tough economic times.
- Convenience - Make people's live...
